Leaving money to ThinkAviation – the AOPA NZ Charitable Trust

You may wish to consider leaving a bequest to the AOPA NZ Charitable Trust. If so, you’ll find some initial information on this page.

About the AOPA NZ Trust –

Founded in 2024 , for the long-haul

The AOPA NZ Charitable Trust was formed by the members of the Aircraft Owner’s and Pilots Association of New Zealand.

AOPA NZ itself began in 1971, when a group of like minded aircraft owners held the first meeting. Since then, AOPA NZ has stood up for General Aviation, advocating for better rules, opportunities and support for pilots and aircraft owners.

The members saw the need to fund inititatives that secured the long-term future of General Aviation in New Zealand, and established the Trust in 2024.

Why make a bequest to the Trust?

Because aviation needs a helping hand.

For many young people, the pathway into aviation can seem out of reach. The cost of learning to fly, complex regulations and licensing requirements, and simply not having the opportunity to discover aviation can all stand in the way.

Through targeted projects, funding and initiatives, your support can help open the door to aviation for the next generation — giving more people the opportunity to discover the freedom, challenge and rewards of flight.

Frequently asked questions

Why make a will?
For peace of mind

A will ensures your wishes are followed and allows you to provide for the people and causes you care about after you are gone..

How do I make or change a will?
Consult a solicitor, Public Trust or trustee company.

You can change your will at any time. It’s wise to review it every 5–7 years, or after significant changes in your life.

What is a bequest and how do I make one?
It is a gift made through your will.

You can leave money, property or other assets to a person or charity. To make a charitable bequest, ask your solicitor to add or include the right wording in your will.

Unless it is included in your will, your intended charitable gift may not happen.

Talk to your solicitor, or whomever made your will about your wish to make a bequest, they will help you through the process.

What wording should I use?
Suggested clause to be included in your will when prepared by a lawyer or trustee company would be as follows:

“I give, devise and bequeath (free of all duty) to AOPA NZ Trust Charitable Trust the sum of $_________________ (or nominated property or proportion of estate) for the general purposes of the Trust.I declare that the receipt of the AOPA NZ Charitable Trust shall be full and sufficient discharge to my trustee(s) for the same and my trustee(s) shall not be bound to see the application thereof.”

How will the AOPA NZ Trust use my bequest?

With a long-term vision for aviation.

The Trust will inspire and enable future generations by providing pathways into all sectors of aviation, advancing education, and promoting the enduring value of general aviation in New Zealand communities.

Strict governance ensures donations support our current initiatives while building a significant Capital Endowment fund for long-term financial stability.

Opportunities also exist for specific initiatives, programmes or scholarships named in memory of donors. We would love to discuss ways to honour your legacy and create a lasting impact from your generosity.
